Workshopping a Seafood Value Chain

This week, the Ecology Action Centre hosted a two-day workshop called ‘Creating a Sustainable Value Chain for Atlantic Canada’s Small-scale Fisheries.’ Fishermen, processors and distributors gathered with local, regional and international marketing specialists for two days of discussion at a pub on Halifax’s waterfront.

Participants worked together to explore viable alternatives to the globalized seafood commodity market. These ‘value chain’ markets are often relationship-based, and recognize and reward sustainable catch methods while supporting owner-operator fishermen and their communities.

Along with the lively dialogue in the room, we made use of social media to share our thoughts and enthusiasm with a wider audience. While detailed reporting will soon be shared from the workshop, you can get a flavour from some of these highlights from the online discussion.
